Go Hokusei

Go at the Edge of the Atlantic

Hokusei Go Club

Hokusei is a Go club based in A Coruña, Spain. Founded in 2017, our name comes from the Japanese word Hokusei (northwest).

We meet every Wednesday afternoon at Café Macondo, where players of all levels and ages get together to play, study, and enjoy Go in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

The club has around 20 members of all ages.

Open de A Coruña – Nuestro primer torneo

This year marks a very special milestone for us: for the first time, the Hokusei Go Club is organizing its own tournament in A Coruña. It will be the first official tournament in Galicia.

The tournament will take place over the weekend of April 18–19 at the MUNCYT Museum in A Coruña.

We’re excited to welcome players from all over Spain — and also from abroad — to share a weekend of Go by the ocean.

Café Macondo

Café Macondo is a cozy, character-filled café in A Coruña, loved for its relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff, and a clientele closely tied to local culture, conversation, and neighborhood life. It’s the kind of place where you feel at home from your very first visit.

With comfortable tables, warm lighting, and soft background music, the café’s pace invites you to stay without watching the clock. It’s not a place you just pass through, but a space meant for sitting down, chatting, and enjoying the moment — something that naturally fits with calm, thoughtful games like Go.

Board games are a regular part of the café’s life, and it’s not unusual to see games stretching on for hours between coffees or drinks. The peaceful atmosphere encourages both concentration and conversation, creating a perfect balance between silence, thinking, and social connection.

For all these reasons, Macondo has become an ideal meeting point for our club: a place where Go is not only played, but shared, discussed, and experienced as part of a pleasant afternoon in good company.

A Coruña

A Coruña is a city open to the Atlantic, bright and full of character, where the sea is always present and sets the rhythm of daily life. Located on a peninsula, it combines maritime tradition with a modern, welcoming urban atmosphere that feels close and friendly to first-time visitors.

Its most iconic symbol is the Tower of Hercules, the oldest Roman lighthouse still in operation in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From the top, it offers spectacular views of the ocean and the city, and reflects A Coruña’s deep historical connection to the sea and navigation.

Almost completely surrounding the city is one of the longest seafront promenades in Europe — a coastal walk that links beaches, cliffs, parks, and neighborhoods. It’s a perfect place to stroll, relax, or simply let yourself be accompanied by the sound of the Atlantic.

A Coruña also stands out for its vibrant cultural life, with museums, exhibitions, concerts, and festivals throughout the year. Added to this is an outstanding food scene: restaurants, bars, and taverns where you can enjoy excellent Galician cuisine, seafood, wines, and a lively, authentic social atmosphere. All of this makes the city an ideal destination both for playing Go and for enjoying everything that happens around the board.

Go Workshop at Japan Day
EOI – A Coruña

As part of the Japan Day event held at the EOI in A Coruña, the Hokusei Go Club organised an introductory Go workshop. Our club member Carlos gave a clear and engaging presentation, covering the basic rules of the game, a brief history, and some interesting facts.

The talk sparked great interest among the participants, who then had the chance to try playing themselves. Members of the club supported them during their first games by commenting on moves, answering questions, and explaining fundamental concepts.

It was a very rewarding experience for both the attendees and us, and a great opportunity to continue promoting Go in A Coruña.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I come and play?

Yes, of course. We always welcome people interested in the game. We meet at Café Macondo every Wednesday afternoon, starting at 7:00 pm.

How much does it cost?

Nothing — it’s completely free. Since Café Macondo is kindly hosting us, it is appreciated it if you order one or more drinks during your stay.

Are there organized classes for beginners?

Not at the moment. If we eventually have a larger group of people interested in learning from scratch, we’ll consider organizing a course. In any case, don’t worry if you come to visit: there will always be someone happy to answer your questions and help you learn the basics.

Can I play on days other than Wednesday?

The Go equipment is not freely available at the café, so a club member needs to be present in order to use it. It’s best to ask in advance — for example, in our chat group — to see if someone would like to meet up with you and play outside our regular schedule.

Is the club official?

Yes. We are an officially recognized club of the AEGO (Spanish Go Association).
