Hokusei Go Club <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Hokusei is a Go club based in A Coru\u00f1a, Spain. Founded in 2017, our name comes from the Japanese word Hokusei (northwest).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We meet every Wednesday afternoon at Caf\u00e9 Macondo, where players of all levels and ages get together to play, study, and enjoy Go in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The club has around 20 members of all ages. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Coru\u00f1a Open \u2013 Our first tournament<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This year marks a very special milestone for us: for the first time, the Hokusei Go Club is organizing its own tournament in A Coru\u00f1a. It will be the first official tournament in Galicia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tournament will take place on the weekend of April 25th and 26th<\/strong> at the MUNCYT Museum in A Coru\u00f1a.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019re excited to welcome players from all over Spain \u2014 and also from abroad \u2014 to share a weekend of Go by the ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Caf\u00e9 Macondo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Caf\u00e9 Macondo is a cozy, character-filled caf\u00e9 in A Coru\u00f1a, loved for its relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff, and a clientele closely tied to local culture, conversation, and neighborhood life. It\u2019s the kind of place where you feel at home from your very first visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With comfortable tables, warm lighting, and soft background music, the caf\u00e9\u2019s pace invites you to stay without watching the clock. It\u2019s not a place you just pass through, but a space meant for sitting down, chatting, and enjoying the moment \u2014 something that naturally fits with calm, thoughtful games like Go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Board games are a regular part of the caf\u00e9\u2019s life, and it\u2019s not unusual to see games stretching on for hours between coffees or drinks. The peaceful atmosphere encourages both concentration and conversation, creating a perfect balance between silence, thinking, and social connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For all these reasons, Macondo has become an ideal meeting point for our club: a place where Go is not only played, but shared, discussed, and experienced as part of a pleasant afternoon in good company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Coru\u00f1a<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A Coru\u00f1a is a city open to the Atlantic, bright and full of character, where the sea is always present and sets the rhythm of daily life. Located on a peninsula, it combines maritime tradition with a modern, welcoming urban atmosphere that feels close and friendly to first-time visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its most iconic symbol is the Tower of Hercules, the oldest Roman lighthouse still in operation in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From the top, it offers spectacular views of the ocean and the city, and reflects A Coru\u00f1a\u2019s deep historical connection to the sea and navigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Almost completely surrounding the city is one of the longest seafront promenades in Europe \u2014 a coastal walk that links beaches, cliffs, parks, and neighborhoods. It\u2019s a perfect place to stroll, relax, or simply let yourself be accompanied by the sound of the Atlantic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Coru\u00f1a also stands out for its vibrant cultural life, with museums, exhibitions, concerts, and festivals throughout the year. Go Workshop at Japan Day
EOI – A Coru\u00f1a<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As part of the Japan Day event held at the EOI in A Coru\u00f1a, the Hokusei Go Club organised an introductory Go workshop. Our club member Carlos gave a clear and engaging presentation, covering the basic rules of the game, a brief history, and some interesting facts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The talk sparked great interest among the participants, who then had the chance to try playing themselves. Members of the club supported them during their first games by commenting on moves, answering questions, and explaining fundamental concepts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a very rewarding experience for both the attendees and us, and a great opportunity to continue promoting Go in A Coru\u00f1a.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not at the moment. If we eventually have a larger group of people interested in learning from scratch, we\u2019ll consider organizing a course. The Go equipment is not freely available at the caf\u00e9, so a club member needs to be present in order to use it.
